Let the world know about this

Above is a photograph of British actress Brenda de Banzie enjoying a cigar during the 21st anniversary celebrations of Pinewood Film Studios in September 1957. In those days, particularly in the world of cinema, cigars were a familiar sight. Just rarely in the hands of women. This confident snapshot from almost seven decades ago sets the scene for our well-deserved tribute to the women shaping cigar culture today.
“I think there is nothing more sexy than seeing a woman smoking a cigar. It is very liberating of any prejudices and old beliefs."

For decades, cigars were often portrayed as a traditionally male pastime. Images of smoke-filled rooms, leather chairs and suited men became part of the cultural stereotype. Yet the reality has always been far more interesting and far more inclusive.
Women play a vital role across the global cigar community. From growers and blenders to brand owners, retailers, writers and passionate enthusiasts, women are helping to define the modern cigar landscape in meaningful ways.
International Women’s Day offers the perfect opportunity to recognise these contributions and honour the women who continue to bring fresh energy, creativity and perspective to the cigar world.
“I founded the Women’s International Cigar Club, very simply, to create a space for all women to be curious, learn about, and enjoy cigars. And for men to learn about cigars from a woman’s perspective. Just as all cigars are different, so are the women who enjoy them."

— Sarah Saunders @womensinternationalcigarclub
Cigars have always been for everyone
The idea that cigars are exclusively for men is a relatively modern misconception. In many cigar-producing countries, women have long played key roles in tobacco cultivation. Skilled female cigar rollers, known as torcedoras, have always worked in factories throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, often becoming highly respected artisans within the trade. Their craftsmanship, precision and experience ensure the quality and character of cigars that are enjoyed around the world.
This is still very much the case, as the cigar community is continually evolving. The modern cigar enthusiast is just as likely to be a woman as a man, and many women are discovering cigars as part of a broader appreciation of flavour, ritual and relaxation. A cigar is ultimately about enjoyment, conversation and personal taste, which are things that belong to everyone.
“I feel that from an interest, cigars have become a meaningful part of who I am: an aficionada who has found among the Sisters of the Leaf not only a common interest, but sorority, passion, support, and a shared deep respect for an art that historically has been kept alive by women. For me, to smoke a cigar is to honour the many women who were and are on the very same journey."

Women are transforming the modern cigar industry
Across the cigar industry, women are contributing at every level. From tobacco farms to blending rooms, distribution networks to marketing teams, our sisters are helping to guide the direction and bring new ideas to the table.
Many women are also building influential platforms within the cigar community itself. Through blogs, podcasts, videos, social media and events, they're connecting enthusiasts, sharing knowledge and helping newcomers to feel welcome. Their voices are broadening the conversation around cigars and bringing new audiences into the fold. One relevant example is the influential UK Aficionadas community.
International Women’s Day is a reminder that industries thrive when diverse perspectives are celebrated. The cigar world is so much richer for the contributions of the women who champion it.
"A beautifully crafted cigar is a symbol of patience, artistry, and indulgence. As a young woman, I love bringing my own sense of elegance and confidence to that timeless ritual."

"I first tried a cigar as a novelty while in Cuba. I fell in love with it. For about 15 years I was the only woman smoker I knew. Now the UK has an amazing network of women enjoying cigars, discussing cigars and claiming space in the industry. It’s so great to know that, in the words of The Eurythmics, "sisters are doin’ it for themselves” and falling in love with it too."

Passion and knowledge in spades
One of the most inspiring aspects of the cigar world is the sense of community that surrounds it. Cigars have always been about more than just tobacco, as shared experiences and the stories that unfold when people gather together are also very much at the heart of it.
Women across the cigar community are fostering exactly that kind of atmosphere. Their passion for the craft creates welcoming spaces where people can learn about flavour profiles, cigar origins and the artistry behind each blend. The result is a cigar scene that feels more open, collaborative and vibrant than ever before.
"Cigars were my way of finding home when I left Cuba. Somewhere along the road, they became more than that. They became a ritual, a lifestyle, and my passion led me to discover more than my homeland. For me, a cigar isn’t just smoke in the air. It’s a pause in a restless world, a companion in solitude that helps keep my sanity alive. They have become my therapy."

With community comes clarity
As more women step into the spotlight within the cigar world, perceptions continue to evolve. What was once seen as a niche or male-dominated hobby is increasingly recognised as a diverse and welcoming global community. Women are hosting cigar clubs, organising tasting evenings, reviewing cigars online and building thriving communities of enthusiasts who share their passion.
In many cases, these platforms have further demystified cigar culture, making it more accessible to people of any gender who may have previously felt unsure about where to start.
The message is simple: cigars are about enjoyment and exploration, and there is no single way to appreciate them.
“Like a cigar, we are shaped by experience, strengthened by challenges, and grow richer with time. This International Women's Day, we celebrate the strength, grace and quiet power of women everywhere.”

— Rosalie Barber @cigar_vogue
Celebrating the craft together
Behind every great cigar is a remarkable amount of craftsmanship. From the careful cultivation of tobacco leaves to the blending and rolling process that shapes each cigar, the journey from seed to finished product involves skill, patience and deep knowledge. As mentioned earlier, women have long been part of that story.
In cigar factories around the world, skilled rollers demonstrate incredible precision and consistency, often producing hundreds of cigars each day whilst maintaining strict quality standards. Blenders and tobacco specialists, many of them female, contribute to the delicate art of balancing flavours and aromas to create distinctive cigar profiles.
Their work ensures that every cigar delivers the experience that enthusiasts expect.
"On international Women’s Day, I am proud to reflect on the expertise, resilience and perspective brought by women to this space, and to celebrate the growing number of women who are helping to protect and elevate the heritage of cigars in the UK."

Inspiring the next generation of cigar enthusiasts
Perhaps one of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the growing number of women discovering cigars for the first time. Whilst some arrive through friends or partners, others encounter cigars via travel, events, or curiosity about premium tobacco. Many quickly become passionate enthusiasts in their own right. As visibility increases, so does inspiration.
When newbies see women confidently enjoying cigars, hosting events or leading conversations within the industry, it reinforces the principle that cigar culture truly belongs to everyone. That sense of representation matters. It encourages more people to explore the hobby without feeling like outsiders.
"My appreciation for cigars really comes down to the moment they create. For me, the 45 minutes to an hour spent with a cigar is a chance to slow down, disconnect, and enjoy the ritual. It’s never just about the cigar itself, but also the atmosphere and the people you meet along the way. As a woman who came to cigars simply out of curiosity and enjoyment, it’s been wonderful to see how welcoming and diverse the community can be."

International Women's Day is a celebration that everyone should get involved in
Women continue to bring talent, creativity and leadership to every corner of the premium tobacco community. Whether they’re crafting cigars, educating enthusiasts, running businesses or simply enjoying a smoke with friends, their contributions are guiding the future of cigar culture.
This is a chance to celebrate those women and the passion they bring to the cigar world. And perhaps it’s also a reminder that some of the most valuable cigar moments are the ones shared with people who love the craft just as much as you do.
"What I love about the cigar industry is the sense of community and craftsmanship behind every cigar. It’s an industry built on tradition, passion, and people who genuinely care about what they create. As a woman in a largely male-dominated space, my experience has been about carving out my place, bringing a fresh perspective, and showing that passion for the industry isn’t defined by gender."
